Land Ho…

Oppy is now fast approaching Sutherland Point, and I think at the end of her next drive, whenever that is, she’ll make landfall there. It hasn’t taken her long to cross the stretch of Botany Bay that lies between Sutherland Point and Spirit Point, and up ahead lies some very interesting geology. I’m really looking forward to seeing what Oppy finds there.

Let’s just take a look at where Oppy was at the end of her most recent drive…

kh2kh1And what is she seeing? Take a look…

pan-1On the left of that pic you can see Cape Tribulation, the hill Oppy is ultimately heading for and will, all being well, climb at the end of the year. To the right is her more immediate destination, and you can see it is littered and strewn with rocks, boulders and stones. If you have a set of old fashioned red and blue 3D glasses, put them on now…

suth 3d1That shows how ‘busy’ the landscape up ahead is.

Oppy has also been taking images through her coloured filter sets, which allow us to create colour views like these…

crater bThat’s a small crater the rover passed recently. And here’s a colour view of – I think, not sure to be honest – part of Sutherland Point…

col viewI think that Oppy’s next drive will take her up onto Sutherland Point, then we’ll get to see some of those rocks and boulders up close and personal. Looking forward to that! In the meantime, I thought I’d close by giving you a glimpse “behind the scenes” at Road to Endeavour, just to show you how these posts are usually written, thus giving you an insight into the glamourous life of an armchair martian and science blogger…

get-attachment.aspxThat’s how I write most of these blog posts, on the receiving end of a huge guilt trip from our cat, Chi Chi. She doesn’t like Mars, by the way, she’s not fascinated by Google Earth’s latest view of Opportunity’s site, she’s trying to stare me out. If she doesn’t get her way, she goes to Plan B, then I have to write like this…

chiIt’s a wonder I get anything done at ALL… 😉

Oppy is now less than 2km away from Solander Point, on the northern tip of Cape Tribulation…

1-48kmCome back soon and see what she does next…

Love Oppy’s new target – that’s going to be some climb. Probably next Martian spring, I’d guess. You have Chi Chi; I have Huckleberry. He never loves my lap more than when it’s near a keyboard!
