Opportunity roves on…

While the world’s new crop of Mars maniacs and space enthusiasts celebrate the historic First Drive of the Mars Science Laboratory “Curiosity” in Gale Crater, halfway around Mars the Mars Exploration Rover “Opportunity” is continuing to do what she does best – drive on, and on, and on…

Having rolled towards, over and then away from Whim Creek, Oppy is now making really good progress in her dash down the eastern side of Cape York. In fact, she’s now almost half way back to the southern end of the Cape, where she made landfall over a year ago..

She’s already passed one promising-looking rocky outcrop, and has gone right past something that initially looked like  a meteorite, but I’m guessing now couldn’t have been or she’d have stopped for a closer look. Anyway, no matter, as this next image shows she’s now fairly racing (in rover terms!) across beautifully flat terrain, heading down the side of Cape York…

… hunting for those all-important clay minerals. Finding those deposits is a big part of Curiosity’s mission too, so naybe Oppy is determined to find them before her newly-arrived big sister…!

Remember how Oppy was recently looking for more of those Homestake-like gypsum veins? Well, looks like she’s found one…

Is it big enough for Oppy to do some science on it? We’ll have to wait and see.

So, huge congratulations to Curiosity and her incredible team for today’s fantastic news. But remember, Oppy is still there, at Cape York, driving hard, seeking new discoveries and seeing new wonders. Far from being Yesterday’s Rover, she’s at the peak of her powers – and her finest hours are still ahead of her… 🙂
