Where next..?

If you read that brilliant Update from AJS Rayl on the Planetary Society website ( http://www.planetary.org/news/2011/0930_Mars_Exploration_Rover_Update.html ) you’ll have learned that Oppy’s time at Chester Lake is slowly but surely drawing to a close, and her next drive-to destination has already been picked out: a long ridge of rock further north, and quite a bit higher than Oppy is now…

The Shoemaker Ridge.

Here’s a quick catch-up guide to where we are, and where we’re going…

And here’s a colour view of the Shoemaker Ridge I’ve made from raws taken recently…

…and in 3D…

Going by what was said in that Update, Oppy could be at Shoemaker Ridge for a while. That’s ok; the ridge is further north and higher up than Oppy has been since arriving at Cape York, so from there she’ll have her best view yet across and down into Endeavour, will be surrounded by beautiful new geology, and for the first time will be able to look “up” Cape York, north, to the Promised Land of the Phylosillicates… 🙂

That’s all for now, but a quick heads-up… in the next couple of days something very, very special will be unveiled on this blog. You have been warned… 😉

Update: Er, did I say “Oppy’s time at Chester Lake is slowly but surely coming to an end”? It looks like Oppy has already driven away from that rock, her studies completed, and is now working her way uphill towards the Shoemaker Ridge…
