Seeing the Faraway Hills a little more clearly…

The latest batch of pictures to come down from Oppy included a large number of images of the same part of the farside of Endeavour’s rim. This must be because those tech wizards at JPL are planning on stacking and integrating them all together to make a single, higher-resolution image which they’ll then release to the world (hopefully in a press release FINALLY announcing the name of That Crater!!!!!!!!!!!). Jumping the gun a little, in the full knowledge that I could never hope to get even remotely close to the image the JPL guys will come up with, I’ve had a go at cleaning them up myself in the hope of making the view a little clearer. And I’m quite pleased with the result.

Here’s one of the raw images…

See how grainy and yucky it is? So, stacking a load of those together, and playing about with skilfully manipulating the brightness, contrast and levels, got me this

Now, as I said, it’s nowhere near JPL- or NASA-quality, and I’m not pretending for a moment that it is. I am just an armchair image enthusiast who loves messing about with these pictures, in the hope of making an image other people find interesting, or attractive – or hopefully both. But yes, I’m quite pleased with that! 🙂
