The Hills are (coming) alive…

… no, not with the sound of music, but with tantalising hints of detail, as Oppy edges towards them! The latest batch of images returned by the rover included 16 shots of the faraway hills, shots like this…

…which look pretty good on their own, but can be combined to make a single, hi-resolution image, and even an animation. I had a go at making a single image mosaic, but it’s not brilliant, and doesn’t show an awful lot more detail than one of the original frames if I’m perfectly honest…

And here’s my animation, which has no scientific value whatsoever, but it was a fun thing to do, and it does give quite a nice impression of Oppy trundling along, bobbling up and down as she crosses the dunes. You might have to click on the image below to see the movement; I won’t know until I’ve had a look myself…! šŸ™‚

I’m hoping that one of my fellow UMSF members will give me permission to share with you an image he made out of those 16 raw frames, which shows amazing detail on the hills. Check back later to see..!

In the meantime, here’s a 3D view of the surface of Mars, seen in close-up, made with original raw images made available on May 4th. As ever, click on it to bring up a full size version…

Update: thanks to FredK from the unmannedspaceflight.com forum for giving me permission to use his fantastic portrait of the hills, created by combining the raw images I mentioned earlier… Click on the image to bring up a full size version.
